Cave
Run Lake was created when the dam was finished in 1973 on the Licking River.
The lake is 8,270 acres and like Laurel River Lake it is located nearly
entirely in the northern portion of the Daniel Boone National Forest.
Two years ago the KDFWR began the 'Cave Run Lake Fish Habitat Improvement Project'. This project has been completed and now it's time to reap the benefits. In total for 2014, over 1,000 Christmas trees, around 800 pallets, 200 bucket stake attractors, around 100 large cedar trees, around 50 large cable spools and 50 plastic pallet trees were added to Cave Run Lake. Click Here to see a map of the added fish attractors.
Cave Run has areas of flooded timber and large hydrilla weed beds throughout the lake. In addition the lake contains gravely banks and large sandstone banks with boulders and chunk rock. The lake can often be very clear but depending on spring rains can turn muddy, but tends to clear quickly. One thing to note is that Cave Run is known as the Musky Capitol of the South, it's almost certain that a few of us will have a run in with a toothy critter or two, so be prepared!
Fishing on Cave Run Lake has picked up in recent years, as with Laurel all three black bass species will be available. The largemouth will be most prominent and has an 'excellent' rating for 2015 from the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife. The North Fork and Licking River portions of the lake (upper reaches) generally hold the larger fish. In these areas try fishing the rocky banks warmed by the morning sun in April and May. For the rest of the lake, fish the edges and pockets of the weed beds, fallen trees and woody structure within embayments. Recent electro fishing catch rates for fish over 15 and 20 inches have been the highest ever recorded on Cave Run Lake. This should continue into 2016 and should provide excellent fishing for larger fish.
While
still uncommon, smallmouth have been picking up in recent years. They are found
primarily off rocky points or shorelines in the lower lake, across from Twin
Knobs beach, the slipped bank area at the back of Scott’s Creek and the rocks
along KY Route 801 can also produce a few fish. Kentucky (Spotted) Bass are
numerous within the middle and lower main lake shoreline and become less common
within the upper reaches of the lake. Most Spots are less than 13 inches long.
Since you
will be in the area you should take advantage of some of the states finest BBQ
and visit:
